On the way back from Faire Sunday night, we filled up at $2.45/gallon. Yesterday, some mess went down, and gas has shot up to $3.55/gallon.
Because most of our gas here in Virginia comes from the Gulf Coast, there are talks of Virginia's supply becoming depleted. There are a few stations around here with homemade banners up, saying "NO GAS". Some area Exxon's have police out front, directing traffic.
I was able to top off last night at $2.92, somewhere around midnight, when there were only a handful of cars out.
Are things this crazy anywhere else? And yes, this is my way of re-opening the old thread about gas prices affecting your time at Faire.

It's insane. I'm thinking about counting out about $10 in pennies, going up there with them in a bag (not rolled) and prepaying for some gas. When the attendant launches into the spiel about not being able to take coins, I can remind him that failing to accept legal tender is a felony, and I would be oh-so happy to call the Secret Service and report them.

Teribble I tell ya. Whoah, no, I hadn't heard that one. A buddy of mine used to work for the IRS and told us about how to tick them off if you had to pay, instead of collect. You could send your payment in a small box, instead of an envelope, because that went to one department, send part of your payment as cash, that goes to another window, some as check, 3rd party check, some money order, etc. Caroline, had you heard about the guy in California with $10,000 in pennies? He and his brother bet each other years ago that they could be the first one to collect a million of anything. He collected pennies, and won the bet. Now he want to cash them in, and he's even tried calling the Govt', because no bank wants to take them (they're rolled and in large rubbermain totes, a whole garage full). No one is returning his calls and he's making a stink about it with the press. We had a lady the other day that came into the store with a $100 and some odd dollar order. She paid in all change, but at least she used the self-checkout (I could see my 16 year old cashiers trying to count all THAT).

I paid $2.79 yesterday afternoon in Frederick. Today it is $2.99 at the same station. COSTCO was $2.79 this a.m. with lines. In Damascus last night it was $3.08. I have also heard that there have been a couple of attendants drug by vehicles that they attempted to stop. I'm going out today to buy locking gas caps for all our trucks at work along with a couple for myself. The truly sad part about this is that it is only going to get worse looooong before it gets better.

I'm going to look at the bright side. I still have a car to put gas into. I still have a home to go to. I still have a job to go to. And all my loved ones still have all of the above also. It's expensive, but it is so much worse for so many people. All this positivity was exhausting

personally, I don't really car about gas. It just means I can't buy as much fabric...which is probably a good thing.
I do have loved ones in the affected areas. My Uncle Bruce lives (lived?) in Gulfport. We haven't heard from him yet. My Uncle Russell lives about 15 mintues north of him. Haven't heard from him or his daughters either. My Uncle Clay went to his in-laws who are inland by 20 miles. He's fine. The house he was in is only missing three shingles so it's fine. My cousin (his son) Adam could be heard laughing in the background. (His parents didn't think it was really a real call since they hadn't been able to call out all day. They figured it was Adam, who's 12, playing with the phone again and teasing them. Aunt Sharon was shocked when she heard my Mom's voice. The odd thing is that our number is the only number they can get out too. Which is not a bad thing. We are all happy to play relay.) Uncle Clay was supposed to attempt to get down to Gulfport to check on Uncle Bruce. No word yet.

Lady Caroline, that was VERY well put! As for me, I will be trucking along in me hubby's sporty celica, oh the horror<insert sarcasm here. But it may cut down on my faire visits if it continues to shoot like this. Sunday on way to faire we payed $2.58, yesterday the cheapest place in Westminster was $2.71, last night it had to close because it ran out of gas. As of yesterday at 5pm the next cheapest place was $2.74 with a 45 minute wait in line and today as of 8am, that same place was $2.87. It is PURE insanity!!

I have extended family that live in Gautier and Ocean Springs..right there and it's a mess..electricity probably will be off for 40 or so days..alot of people are sending their kids off to other towns North, etc because school is predicted to be out for at least 45 days...I did hear a complaint from one of them that FEMA hasn't been spotted anywhere and the lines for ice and gas are ridiculous and some people can't access their bank accounts...wow...I can't even imagine...

Oh man. This reminds me of the '70's. I wasn't old enough to drive yet, but my dad had us all scanning the gas station signs to find gas at a cheaper price. And we'd sit for long periods of time just to get into the gas station. Oh man. Some idiot in San Bernardino was selling it by the liter at a price that ended up much cheaper, and the line was three cars thick around the block. And that was when gas went up to what, 70 cents a gallon? Talk about panic in the streets. Where are the electric cars they were working on back then? We should have them by now, it's the 21st century!
You know, we might have riots soon. Be safe, everyone.

Very nicely said Caroline. It certainly helps to put all of our complaining into perspective.
Jubilee, I pray that you hear from your loved ones soon and that they are safe and sound. Magpie, I hope your loved ones are safe and sound as well. I just can't imagine....

honestly, at the most expensive gas station (the one that's always at least 15 cents more than anywhere else around me) it's at $3.18. I went on base to fill up for $2.61. I hear everyone saying that it's $3.50 and on up near where they are, but I have yet to see anything near that. Most of the one's I saw just driving around town today were around the $2.80 range here in downtown Bethesda. I bet if I went over to my fav gas station next to Tysons (soon to be the biggest mall on the east coast, woohoo!) it would be around $2.70. I really haven't seen this huge jump everyone is talking about. Maybe up a penny from prices last week right before the weekend, but that's been it around here....

Our gas has gone up about $1.00 in the past 48 hours. I filled up two days ago and the price was $2.57. I just topped off my tank and paid $3.49. The place up the street was already at $3.67. Both of the gas stations by my school were closed today - they took down the price signs and covered the tanks - they said that no gas had been delivered. At least I can be thankful that I have the things that I have and my family is safe, so I shouldn't complain about gas prices.

I'm with you there Jubilee! Had to curb myself at Hancock Fabrics today because I just filled up the car! Only bought one[/u] remnant piece rather than the five I really wanted! ;D Like I don't have enough fabric already languishing to be made into something fabulous!

[/quote] Exactly! which reminds me...i've added another "to be made" gown to my list. I remembered that I have a very small piece of 16th c cloth that I really want to make into a front of a bodice of an Elizabethan gown. I have the fabric for the rest of the gown...it's just a matter of me gathering up the courage to cut up something that is older than anything else in the house. ....I've just got to remember, I wasn't the first person in the 21st century to cut it up. And...if I don't use it as the front of a bodice, what good is having an old textile is you don't show it off?

My rant for the day :-) I know that we as a nation are quite spoiled when it comes to "reasonable" gas prices but notice how when the prices are raised we get upset and then they lower them a few cents and we become complacent with that amount...just a year ago gas was $1.50ish a gallon and we started throwing fits and now if it's $2.98 we will think it's a bargain...hmmm maybe we are lemmings :-) hehehehe okay Magpie off her soapbox now....
