Hey on Pirate Weekend Sept.26-27 Lochmere is having there Baronial Birthday just around the bend at the Elks camp just a few minutes away from MDRF! I know that Scadieans and Rennies don't always see eye to eye but I think it would be fun to do both! Just to get up on Sunday mourning and don't have to drive all over Robin Hood's barn to get to fair and get the premo parking space too would be worth it!

From the one SCA event I attended, I was under the impression that this event was held at that location and date to spite faire in general (though, given the disparate size of the two groups, it's more of a symbolic gesture than anything else). My wife and I stumbled into an SCA event one time while in garb, and they dutifully produced a sign-in book and asked us what barony we were from. When we told them the garb came from a ren faire, we might just as well have said we were from Al-Qaeda. We then got a thorough lecture on the inadequacies of our garb (which was rich coming from a king wearing tennis shoes),and how a few of them went to MDRF every five or six years just to remind themselves "how bad it is".
I don't have any trouble with SCA, except for the trouble SCA has with us (fariegoers).

I hear horror stories about how bad the SCA is toward Rennies all the time. I play in both and I can understand. I wonder if you and your lady had come from Pirate Weekend? Some Rennies don't understand some SCA customs like you can't call yourself "SIR" becuse knighthoods have to be earned. Or wearing a blue feather in you hat may mark you as someone your not.[like gay] I admit it is a shame that Rennies,Larp people and SCA folks don't see eye to eye sometimes but when your in the land of SCA you play be there rules and when your in Revel Grove you play by there rules. I always tried to be welcomeing to any Rennies who have come to a SCA event. And explaned SCA sumptuary laws and rules and how our game differant and the same as well. We are all kissing cousins at hart!-Lord Rich

Our garb was just fine with them ... until they found out we got it from a ren faire. It was the mention of the words "renaissance festival" that immediately set their teeth on edge. (Note: this was at an event in DC, not the particular one you're describing.) I admit it is a shame that Rennies,Larp people and SCA folks don't see eye to eye sometimes but when your in the land of SCA you play be there rules and when your in Revel Grove you play by there rules. I wish those SCAdians who portray French or Irish characters would remember that when they wander into VARF and start disrupting acts by yelling about how much they hate the English during stage shows. Sure, they're being more "realistic", but they're also ruining a show for dozens of paying customers. And, of course, cast members aren't allowed to be equally "realistic" by having the militia impale them on their pikes. I always tried to be welcomeing to any Rennies who have come to a SCA event. And explaned SCA sumptuary laws and rules and how our game differant and the same as well. We are all kissing cousins at hart!-Lord Rich I agree. That's why I have been repeatedly puzzled by all the antagonism I have experienced at the hands of the SCA, to the point that I now pretty much avoid any contact with them. The primary reason I even bothered posting on the matter is to warn rennies of potential problems. If you have experience with this venue and can more-or-less guarantee that the type of abuse I've been subjected to will not be present, by all means do so, and I can go back to minding my own business.
