"Chivalry Weekend", October 20th and 21st is also the weekend that the "Mediaeval Baebes" have been contracted to perform. I know these gals had a huge following last year. My question is this: Having seen them, are you happy that they are returning?

I didn't see them 'cause there were just too many people to even attempt to jump to see over shoulders to see them...
I heard mixed things about their preformances... Good to see them come back - it will bring lots of folks to faire - but closing weekend and the Day of Wrong - even more people to just not get it ;D

OMG!! I, for one, am THRILLED that they are returning! I adore their music and have been listening to them for years! I realize that they are not everyone's cup of tea, in that everyone might not appreciate a more "serious" musical performance or their style of music (which is QUITE authentic!...they sing true Renaissance period music, sometimes in English, sometimes in French, sometimes in Latin)...their music is usually performed close to acapella, with only the beating of some drums and an occasional flute...
That having been said, there is a down side to such an acclaimed and internationally famous group performing at the faire and it is EXACTLY what Jenn just said. My husband, stepson, and I were geared to see their performance, but at least 1 show before the Baebes performed, the theatre area was growing packed with people. We waited for what seemed an eternity, with me scouting out ANY kind of area where we could see them. It was wall to wall, shoulder to shoulder. We finally managed to find a seat, but by then, the wait had worn us down.
I wish that they had been schedule to appear on any other weekend other than the final weekend of faire. Jenn is correct in saying that there will be a LOT of people just not getting it...and for us die-hards, we will probably be spending that weekend saying goodbye to friends at faire and maybe focusing on having a final, farewell sorta weekend, instead of wanting to wait around for a decent seat.
I think the Baebes will bring additional folks to faire, due to their notoriety. As much as I love them and want to see them, the crowd and the wait takes away from their appeal for me...but I can still enjoy my cds of 'em.
Sorry to be so wordy...you know how I get...ta!

I liken it to the Chainsaw Juggling this year (How is this period???). Just for a buck, fill the seats as MDRF becomes more corporate and less community.

Well, the Baebes are "period"...very much so...but I can see the point about things becoming more corporate...there's gotta be a happy medium somewhere!

Looking at their website and albums, I can see that the songs themselves (ie, the words and basic melody) are authentic enough, but from what little of their music I was able to hear last year, the arrangements/harmonies sounded quite modern. Listen to some of the chorale work in The Tudors or to some of Gary Schwartz's virginal playing at faire to hear the difference. If I had to describe it in as few words as possible, I'd probably go with "Enya karaoke" (which is not meant as an insult).

I don't presume to be any sort of expert on Renaissance music...or any other kind, for that matter. That being said, all I will say is that I enjoy them and am personally glad that they're returning.

I've heard of the Med. Baebes, but I'm not really familiar with their music. I'll have to give them a listen sometime.
Now if Blackmore's Night ever came to Revel Grove, I'd be fighting for a seat! I know, again not everyone's cup of tea, but I love this band! They're not exactly period, but are a fusion of renaissance, folk and rock, with a little Abba thrown in. They can't be compared to people like Gary Schwartz or even the Rogues, but they are a fun band to watch. That, and they give garbed rennies preffered seating at their concerts.

I hear ya, Ladynesa! I ADORE Blackmore's Night!! Of course, some people might take issue with their blending of folk and rock with Renaissance "themes" and styles, but again, like the Baebes, I just love the music and would jump at the chance to see them in person!!

I'm not a big fan. When they made their first appearance at MDRF, I was unimpressed. Of course they were not miked very well and were at the Boar's Head stage before the shade was built.
It's incredible to note their apparance last season made for the highest attendance ever at festival!

Although I LOVE having the Baebes at faire, I don't think that MDRF is quite "geared" for such an internationally famous act. Clearly, seating was not quite adequate and from what BF said, the miking at at least one performance stage wasn't adequate as well. I am still glad that they're making their way to "OUR" festival (it is quite an honor!), but don't know that I'll be fighting the crowds again this year (and particularly on closing weekend) to view them. Still, if anyone hasn't seen them before, they are worth taking a moment to check them out....give a listen, if at all possible. They've been doing this stuff for many years and were my first exposure to this sort of music. I've been a fan ever since my first listen.

When 16th century Renaissance faires are full of pirates in 18th century garb singing 19th century songs, "period" is flexible. ;D

If that be the case, then we'll have to arrest or admonish every wench that we see in sneakers, pyrates with cell phones, etc. etc. And I would HATE to see The O'Danny Girls do away with their rendition of "The Scallywag Who Can Shag Celtically"...it just wouldn't be the same faire without it!

The iPod is usually in the vehicle to play Pyrates on the way down. If I took it out, I'd wind up losing it somewhere. I like the idea of the Baebes coming back this year. I didn't see them last year since I wasn't going to arrive to a stage 3 hours ahead of time, but it certainly cleared out the pubs and made seating easier to come by at Hack and Slash.

Having thrown out the question in the first place, I guess I should give my opinion. I'm glad they are at Faire. They sell tickets and bring in money and add a note of "prestige" to our Festival. That said, I can't understand why anyone would go to see them. The crowds are ridiculous. Their music, while beautiful, rich and sometimes even haunting, relies heavily on electronic mixing, which is difficult to achieve in a live, outdoor setting. (Hence all the comments about them being "poorly miked". This is NOT the festival's fault!). Buy the CDs, download them into your forbidden iPods or whatever, but I can't recommend seeing them in concert. As for being "babes"... um, look around you. There is no shortage of beautiful women at the Maryland Renaissance Festival!

Many of their songs, even on their cds, are done with only beating of drums and playing of flutes and guitars. Check out their "Mistletoe and Wine" cd (Quan Vey La Lauzeta is a prime example of this)...Cantiga from the Undrentide cd uses only flutes and period percussion. Not being a musician or a record producer, I don't know what sort of electronic mixing is used or required when they're putting together their cds, but the songs they sang last year at MDRF translated well from their cd versions to live performances. Guess it's just a matter of taste for everyone...I, personally, love them and would love to see them again, just not looking forward to the crowds...

Not to beat a dead horse, but I thought I'd put this link to the Baebes Myspace profile up...then people, if they wish, can hear a few of their songs for themselves and decide if they think it is a show they'd like to see or not, not relying on any "pro" or "con" arguments that might be presented here. profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=17991847 (Just cut and paste into your browser)

I'm relatively new to the faire, so I saw the baebes for the first time on closing weekend. I have to say, I was impressed. Even with the crowds and over the top "more pagan than thou" act, I thoroughly enjoyed their music. Since the faire, I've actually bought a couple of their cds, and I'm very pleased with my purchases. Simply put, they have a beautiful sound.

I am relatively new here, but have been going to the Festival for years, even back to Columbia. I take my 2 girls, 7 and 9, to the Festival 4 -6 times a year for some daddy time and they love it. The girls had never been much for any of the musical acts, but this year the girls heard about the Baebes (from Mother Goose, iirc) and really wanted to see them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, but my girls were absolutely spellbound and asked to buy a CD, which we got autographed. This floored me since until now 99% of the music they listened to was Radio Disney (sanitized top 20 pop for the pre teen set).
They even said they wanted to start listening to more music at the Festival next year, which I am thrilled about. Now I just have to keep them interested until they can start driving and I can have more than 1 or 2 "Daddy Juices" a day.
I don't think that closing weekend/Chivalry weekend/ kicking Hack and Slash off the last weekend is the best choice for scheduling, but it may have been the best fit for the Baebes schedule. I also agree with the "prestige" that an act like them can bring to Revel Grove, even if the mundanes see us on the day of wrong.

...I don't think that closing weekend/Chivalry weekend/ kicking Hack and Slash off the last weekend is the best choice for scheduling, but it may have been the best fit for the Baebes schedule. ... The scheduling of the acts is very complicated and is based on many things, including availability. All of the acts are in high demand and often can only be available for part of the festival. In fact, the scheduling is currently being planned and will continue for the next few months. I wouldn't make any unfounded assumptions about what was involved or what will be the case in the coming season.
