According to FaireRaven, she received this news and posted it at Wench.org, Michele Shultz (Stupina/Columbina) posted similar in her LJ:
It is with deep regrets and heartfelt sorrow that I have to tell of the passing of Dan Mehn, known to many as Dan the Master Joyner, woodworker at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. For a while, Dan hosted the wench hostel at MDRF in his booth. He was on his way to see Cirque Du Soleil in DC when he had a heart attack and was taken to Howard University Hospital. I have no further details at this time.
Our love and thoughts go out to Dan's family. For those not familiar, Dan owned and created all the cups, tables, candelabras, and art at his booth which neighbors the Lion Rampant shield booth, just across and up the hill from the Dragon Inn and the Elephant Rides.
His wooden art was incredible and he helped me via email with information on how to build a split wooden medieval chair. Dan had a car accident on the way to festival last season and now to have this happen so close to the end of this year's festival is doubly upsetting.
It seems that every two years the faire loses someone close to it. Bill Huttel, then Ken Carnes, now Dan Mehn.
Times like this make us draw our MDRF family that much closer together.
We need a group hug.

How very sad. The man had a difficult year from what I've read. My condolences to his loved ones.

From Michelle Shultz (Stupina/Columbina): Glen Mehn has requested that a small memorial be held on Sunday morning at faire site. FAIRE MANAGEMENT HAS ALREADY APPROVED THIS.
The memorial will be on Sunday morning at 10 AM at Dan's booth.
This will be an opportunity for anyone who would like to, to share their thoughts on this sweet man.

From Dan's son: Folks:
I'm sorry to do this in such an impersonal fashion. I suspect that many of you have heard this news. If not, I hope that it does not come as too much of a shock.
Yesterday evening, around 8PM, Dan had a heart attack in Washington, DC and passed away. He went very quickly. He was at the opening night of a Cirque du Soleil show, which was one of his favorite things in the world. The medics there performed CPR, as did the Paramedics and EMTs who arrived, as did the ER doctors. He had no vital signs on arrival at the ER, and was pronounced dead at approx. 8:45 PM on 26th August, 2006.
Dan always lived life on his own terms and made it a point to spend the time he had doing things that he wanted to do. He died doing something he loved.
He is survived by his two sons, myself (Glen Mehn) and my older brother, Danny Mehn. He is also survived by his brother, Adam Mehn, and his aunt Jackie Madden.
For those of you in the DC area, we will have a ceremony in front of his booth at the Maryland Renaissance Faire this Sunday, 29th Oct, 2006, from 10:00AM to 12:00 noon. You are all welcome; this will be a low-key affair for anyone who wants to get together to remember Dan.
For those of you in the New Orleans area, we will have a small private ceremony. Further updates will arrive as the details are sorted out.
We would like to ask that in lieu of flowers, you please make a donation to a New Orleans-area arts organization, including:
NOMA (the New Orleans Museum of Art): www.noma.org/ The Craft Emergency Relief Fund: www.craftemergency.org/ Project HEAL: www.acadianaartscouncil.org/site115.php
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Email is the best medium for this.
Please remember my father with laughter and joy. This is how he would have wanted it.
Please feel free to share this.
Glen M
