Every year on the last day of the MDRF season for almost a decade, some playtrons get into the Hallowe'en spirit a bit early and dress "wrong" as a break from donning their normal Ren garb.
Some folks just make subtle changes, like dressing as the opposite sex or wearing their garb inside out or using some wild fabric to wear as garb. Others, like Noir Cyn and myself, take a character and turn it Renaissance (Dr. Evil with a black fox, Klingon pyrate, Medieval Batman in a kilt). Still others take it all the way to Hallowe'en by wearing costumes without any reference to the time period.
However folks dress, it's always important to remember that the faire is based in the 1500s and when guests arrive to the faire, that is what they expect to see. If we playtrons are dressed out of the ordinary for that time period, some of these guests will be confused and some worry that this will, in effect, "ruin the atmosphere" for those guests.
So if you're exercising your creative side on The Day of Wrong (which is NOT an official MDRF event), take into consideration those folks that might not understand our outfits. Part of our rights to free speech in this country cover what we wear and as long as its tasteful (it's a family faire) and doesn't distract from the performers.
The management and cast put a lot of time, money, and love into MDRF and to take away even a part of that experience from a guest isn't in the spirit of how our lil' group supports the festival. So just a touch of common sense might help that. . . if you're in an outfit that will draw a lot of attention, don't walk through an audience during a show or sit in the front row . . . . if someone wants a photo taken with you, take the photographer and guest off to the side. . . . things like that.
Just a little extra thought and courtesy will go a long way in keeping The Day of Wrong a happy celebration of our last day of the season without taking a lot away from the guests.
Always remember that on each and every day of faire from first to last, someone is visiting for their very first time . . . and we want them to come back.
