Hi everyone!
Blair and I couldn't make Oktoberfest this past weekend (dang (not the Lt.)!! NOW what am I going to do with my dirndl!??!?!?)
But the good news is that we took this weekend off to go pick up our new RV!!!!! We are soooo ready for doing some traveling with the dogs and going to some new fests next year.
I don't know if we'll have it registered with MVA in time for this weekend, but we will almost definitely be there for closing weekend ready to hit up both days. (and be very very tired on Monday)
Hopefully EVERYONE will be able to make it for the FINAL 07 weekend - we are very much looking forward to the last 2 weekends.
What do all of you guys do in the off season for kicks?
Anyone hear of anything good going on in DC/Baltimore for Halloween? (my favorite "holiday") We don't get many trick or treaters in the woods.

Hopefully EVERYONE will be able to make it for the FINAL 07 weekend - we are very much looking forward to the last 2 weekends. What do all of you guys do in the off season for kicks? PARF the weekend after closing. CRF a weekend or two after that (whenever the Pyrates are visiting). After that, all the Renaissance Christmas stuff starts gearing up (though that will be sparse this year - no Madrigal Feast and no Thomas Tallis at the National Theatre, although Gary will be performing as himself with an opera singer in November and Mary Ann Jung will be portraying Clara Barton). For that matter, Hither, Dither and Yon from the VA faire will be performing there the day after MDRF closing day. (see www.nationaltheatre.org/monday/monday.htm for details). After that, we'll go to Colonial-era balls in Alexandria and make a trip or two to Colonial Williamsburg. One of these days we'll have to make it to Jamestown, as the garb is virtually identical. Come February or march there's usually a pirate invasion or two, as well as the annual Privateer Feast (though tickets have been rather hard to come by as of late). By the time we catch up on our sleep, it's time for VARF rehearsals to start.

Guess I'm the resident weirdo here...but we have very much an "off" season....as we are pretty far removed from any other ren-faires (MDRF is 3 hours 1 way for us), we are content to busy ourselves with other things...weekends either quietly chilling on our front porch with beverages or (if it gets too cold) inside shooting pool or at a local pub or one reasonably nearby...dinners out perhaps on a Friday night...our usual trek to Key West sometime in February, after all of the holiday madness is over with...lots of work, work, work, especially for Kendall..."pleasure" shopping trips (as opposed to HOLIDAY MUST SHOP shopping trips...urgh!) where we venture to fun places like Barnes and Noble....catching the occasional concert...it's more than fine with me that we don't do any other faires or festivals...after 9 weeks of hauling back and forth, spending the $$ at MDRF (not to mention the lodging, gas, etc.), we're ready for a break. There, I've said it...I love MDRF, but I don't think I'd want a year-long diet of it...the off time makes me appreciate it all the more. One thing I WILL be doing in off-season this year...and that will be praying, chanting, and dancing daily for COOL and MOIST weather at MDRF next year! WOO-HOO!

Well, not that I make it to fest enough to need a break (heavy sigh), I do still know what you mean Tigerlily. After MDRF ends it is kinda nice to be able to move on to other interests, and get over not being at faire on the weekends. In a way I envy people that attend other faires and events throughout the year, but on the other hand, I wouldn't want to have faire year round. It would be like Christmas every day..it'd be fun for a while, but would get old eventually and it wouldn't be special anymore. I cherish my few visits all the more- because they are limited it makes them that much more special and memorable. I don't know what I'd do if (gasp) faire ever got "old"! After faire ends I console myself by enjoying the rest of the fall season, Halloween is my favorite holiday. It's fun without all the stress of Christmas. After Halloween all of Becca's marching band commitments start winding down, and before you know it, the hustle and bustle of the holidays is upon us. I'd love to see Hack and Slash's Christmas special this year, but don't know if we can still score tickets or not. I've never done it, but hear it's loads of fun. That Poe evermore event at PARF sounds fun too. When winter settles in I go into hibernation mode, and spend LOTS of time reading, watching movies, WAY too much time on the compy, lots of trips to the book store and library. Occasionally going out to dinner, socializing and imbibing with our neighbors, playing cards on friday nights with my dad and brother-pretty mundane but fun stuff. This winter I'd like to try planning a garb project and actually spend lots of time working on it instead of the usual frantic rush to throw something together at the last minute in August.

Glad that I could bring a little chuckle to ya, BF! hehe!
Ladyneysa, your off season sounds really great! I was thinking right along the same lines as you, when you say that faire all year long would be like Christmas every day. I want faire to be something super special...for us, this year has unfortunately not been, due mainly to suffering from allergies and the weather. I don't wanna get burned out on faire either, and I'm so afraid that maybe what's happened this year is just that...although I'm still trying to say it was the weather mostly.
Like you, I enjoy hunkering down for cooler weather...I'm still wishing for snow (we had NONE last year!)...I enjoy that "down time" of watching movies, reading, spending cold, rainy Sunday afternoons curled up on the sofa with my honey while we both read something. And, like you, I have felt great twinges of envy for those who live close enough to other faires and "events" (like Pyrate Invasions, etc.), as we have nothing even close to resembling such things around here...but then again, like you, I have other interests and am eager to get into them...things that we have to set aside for MDRF season (visiting with friends, house projects, billiards on a Saturday night, etc.) I've missed those things a lot and will enjoy getting back into (what is for us) our "normal" life. Thanks for making me feel not so weird. I really appreciate it...and it was soooo great to meet you and your fam this year...it was one of my highlights!!

Once MDRF is over for me, I start preparing for Fredrick Celtic Festival and start duing all the other pre-season planning. Especially since we are planning on going to Pennsic next year as well as finding ourselves drug out of the house to other Festival related events. Plus the Local is having elections this spring so it will never end for me.

Most of us in the cast, as well as the musicians, variety acts, street acts, and the like continue to perform in various venues in and around Washington, Baltimore, and throughout the Country. In addition to the usual hangouts (for example, ComedySportz in Arlington, VA. www.comedyindc.com/) there are many theaters and clubs, often located in and around great bars and food places, where you can meet with us in other forms. I certainly hope to wear out my welcome here on the FOMDRF Bulletin Board, shamelessly plugging off-RenFest activities. I'm an artistic associate, for example, with a theater in Adams-Morgan www.landlesstheatrecompany.org/ (in Washington, D.C.---home of great bars and the Country's finest falafel www.falafelshop.com/) that, among other things, will be producing "Debbie Does Dallas; the Musical!", a fine family-oriented entertainment, later in the season. I'm hoping that a few of our wonderful Court ladies will be singing and dancing their hearts out in that production. modified to add hyperlinks to shameless plugs
