An friendly adversary ( thewhitedragon )wrote up a post in both the MDRF and AFR group LJ communities about a RenFest Movie: www.imdb.com/title/tt1034090/I might be standing a bit alone but I think anything that brings more people into our hobby is a good thing. I would not have become a fan of NASCAR without the likes of Ricky-Bobby or Tom Cruise. Once I wanted to investigate what the hype was about. . . I got hooked! Why is it that close-knit communities such as the Ren-folks want to condemn a parody of their own lives? Are people that insecure about what they do that they can't stand a bit of humor poked at them? Trekkies was a wonderful documentary about folks way-too-into the Star Trek universe and I've seen several similar works about comic book hobbiests and even Al Gore put out an entertaining mock-umentary (no hard facts, just junk science) about the "green house effects" (sounds like a Dr. Seuss book) on the Earth. Why not have some fun with rennies? Hell, the way some of us dress. . .we're just asking for it! LOL. . . I say the more fun we can have, the better. . . . and there is NO such thing as bad press. I learned a while ago that you want people to talk about you if you're going to succeed. Who cares what they say. . . you only fail when people stop talking. I say bring it on and I'd be more than happy to help make this movie a hit! Huzz. . . uh. . . hooray.

Hey, any movie with Cary Elwes in it can't be all bad, he was in The Princess Bride after all! I also liked him in Robin Hood Men In Tights. Then there's that, um, interesting Lord of the Rings parody Jack Black did with Sarah Michelle Gellar, so comedy wise it may be a hoot. (I'm gonna be nice and not even comment about Lindsay Lohan!) Depending on how the movie is done, I can see where people who make their living doing faires might get offended for being made fun of, but I don't think I, as your average rennie, would be offended. I can't judge something I haven't seen though. The exposure could be a good thing. At least our subculture has gotten so big that it's getting noticed, and that's not a bad thing. I loved the tiny reference to renfaires in Weird Al Yankovics' White and Nerdy Video! Some people may be curious enough to learn more. People who already have their minds made up to hate renfaires are just gonna feel their opinions are validated. Then there's those of us who might even have a good laugh over it, who knows? I agree that folks should have the ability to sometimes be poked fun at. The ability to laugh at yourself can take you far, or at least keep you from going insane. Being able to relax and not take myself too seriously is one of the reasons I dress "funny" and go to renfest in the first place!

(I'm gonna be nice and not even comment about Lindsay Lohan!) I'll go there... If LiLo is in the movie, it will bomb. I'll still go see it because I'm a huge Jack Black fan but Lindsay is box-office poison.

The thing is that people who make fun of Rennies or Trekkies or whatever, really want to garb up too, but they take themselves to seriously, their shoes are too tight, or their heads aren't screwed on quite right, or some combination thereof.
life can get awfully droll if you can't have the occassional laught at yourself

Interesting! I wonder if they will be using an actual festival site to do the filming?
